Solar energy uses are vast in both large and small-scale applications. Cost has always been one of the primary reasons that the use of solar energy has been limited in the past. In certain communities, local utility companies will even buy surplus power generated by homeowners for use by other consumers.

In addition, in various locations throughout the developing world the uses of solar energy include the capturing of solar radiation to provide energy to off-grid desalination plants.

The primary benefit associated with solar power in any application is the fact that it offers an alternative to the dependence on traditional sources of energy and from the necessity of connecting to an electrical power grid.
