Solar Energy Uses

Solar energy uses are vast in both large and small-scale applications. Cost has always been one of the primary reasons that the use of solar energy has been limited in the past. However, advancements have been made in solar cell technology, which have decreased the cost of solar system installation. With such cost-effective advancements solar energy holds much promise as an alternative energy source for the future.

Because of the mentioned technological advancements, solar energy can now be used to power essentially anything that is powered by other energy sources. In addition, solar energy can be used in private residences with or without the use of solar panels.

Two variations of solar energy uses: active solar and passive solar. The latter utilizes a construction system that orients a structure on an east-west axis. The north and south sides of the structure are wider and longer than the west and east sides. The south face is equipped with a generous area of glass to gather solar radiation. With active solar power, photovoltaic silicon solar cells are used to capture sunlight, which is then converted to electricity.

Solar power as an alternate source of energy is an attractive option for private use in residential homes. One can choose to heat his or her dwelling through active solar design techniques or passive solar heating processes. The electrical needs of a home can be derived from solar panels placed on the home’s roof. The purpose, of course, is to create a source of heating and light independent of an electrical grid connection. In certain communities, local utility companies will even buy surplus power generated by homeowners for use by other consumers.

Solar energy use for objects such radio telephones, microwaves or repeaters for radio and television stations are now a standard application. The use of solar energy for transportation signaling such as airplane warning lights is also a common practice. Additional uses include pipeline monitoring systems, bridge lighting, and lighting for other outdoor structures.

Additional Solar Energy Uses

The use of solar energy to power public transportation vehicles is also on the increase. In some major cities, one can see vehicles such as light rails, trolleys and buses that feature solar power. Plans for the use of solar power for bus shelters are also being considered by solar technologists. In addition, in various locations throughout the developing world the uses of solar energy include the capturing of solar radiation to provide energy to off-grid desalination plants.

Solar Energy Uses, Independence From Utility Companies

The primary benefit associated with solar power in any application is the fact that it offers an alternative to the dependence on traditional sources of energy and from the necessity of connecting to an electrical power grid. As additional solar energy uses are found the use of exhaustible resources will subsequently decrease, which will ultimately protect the planet and make the world a better place in which to live.
